Citrus farm in Adausena
Date:26 July 2004 to 0 0000
Goal:
Adausena lies in a very fertile area. Many of the inhabitants cultivate different crops. The oil palm trees bear fruit, from which palm oil is obtained. Plantains, yams, maize and pine apples are also cultivated. Furthermore, cocoa, a cash crop, is also cultivated.
The local government encourages citrus farming.
BigStep is also helping to get pieces of land ready for the cultivation of crops. We started citrus farming in 2003. This has created job for a lot of the villagers. The bush must first be cleared, and the land must be prepared for cultivation. The seedlings must be planted and must be taken care of for a long time. It takes about four years before the trees begin bearing fruit. The citrus project is being financed by offering the orange trees for adoption. A tree can be adopted for € 20 and one one or more trees can be adopted. Paying 20 euros at a time means the adopted orange tree can be taking care of for ten years.
